When the church, in its earliest moments, faced persecution their first response was to pray. But how did they think about their situation? What shaped their prayers?

In this one evening class, we will turn to Acts 4 and listen to the church pray and then anchor our thinking in Psalm 2–because that is where they drew their thoughts from. It is quite encouraging to listen in on their praying and learn something about how we can think and pray when we are facing serious hardship.

This one-evening class will meet on Thursday, November 21, at 6:30 pm (EST). Although the class is free, we ask you to register so we can send you what you will need to sign on that evening.

What is the “fear of God”? What does it mean? How should it shape our thought?

The concept of the fear of God is mentioned in the first book of the Bible and the last book of the Bible. And when we begin to notice it, we will find it woven throughout the Scirptures. But we don’t often discuss it, pursue it, or even think much about the fear of the Lord.

Over three consecutive Tuesday evenings, we will step into both Old Testament and New Testament passages to explore the idea of the fear of God–and we will discover how very important this dimension of life with God truly is.

This online class will meet, Tuesday evenings, November 26, December 3 and 19,  at 6:30pm (EST).

Most Christians have a favorite verse or two out of Paul’s epistle to the Romans. And that is great. But maybe there is more for us in that letter, if we slow down and read it well.

After having explained the essentials of his understanding of what God has done through Jesus for those who believe (in Romans 1–5), he raises four critical questions . . . and answers them (in chapters 6 and 7).

This often overlooked section of the letter has some great insights for followers of Jesus about how they can live out their lives in faith. We will take two evenings, online, December 5 and 12, beginning at 6:30 pm (EST, US).

When we think of the Christmas story, we readily turn to the Gospels. Both Luke and Matthew tell us things that shape our thinking about what Christmas is all about.

But at times, those familiar accounts can–because of their very familiarity–lose their power to thrill and stir us. So as we prepare our hearts for celebrating, The River is offering a one-evening Christmas intensive. We’re going to turn to the letters of Paul and let him explain his thoughts about Christmas. As we dip into a number of passages from Paul’s epistles, we’ll gain some fresh perspective–and some renewed grounds for celebrating.
